The Choral Music of Ng Cheuk-Yin

The Choral Music of Ng Cheuk-Yin concert, presented by CU Chorus Association Limited, will be held on 11 June 2017 (Sunday), 8:00pm, exclusively featuring the choral music by the renowned Hong Kong composer Ng Cheuk-Yin.

Mr Ng Cheuk-Yin is currently one of the multi-faceted musicians in the town, equally at home across various genres and musical styles. His Singing Voices of the World and HuXi, two theme songs especially written for the Global Outstanding Children and Youth Chinese Singing Festivals, are popular choral pieces among choral communities in the mainland China. His Cantopop Under the Sakura Tree for pop singer Hins Cheung received many pop chart awards.

As a singer in a cappella groups, Ng released his solo a cappella album Single Singers in 2011, which aroused public interest in a cappella choral singing. Recently in February 2017, Ng successfully crowd-funded for the production and publication of his forthcoming album Two Are Better Than One, including many exciting collaborations with a number of musicians.

This CU Chorus concert will commence with a newly rearranged version of Requiem HK for chorus and piano. This work is originally conceived as a choral theatre for the a cappella group Yat Po Singers. The new arrangement attempts to explore various possibilities in traditional choral singing while preserving the dark undertone of the original work. In the second half of the concert, there will be a selection of original songs that Ng collaborated with lyricist Jessie You See Hand, including Fly Me to the Moonlight, HuXi and Spring Diary, plus a newly composed Cantonese choral suite Ears in Heaven, commissioned by CU Chorus. These cheerful and melodious pieces provide a stark contrast with the first half programme, showcasing Ng's talent in various musical styles.

Choral scores of the performing pieces shall be available for sale that night, which includes the newly published Cantonese Choral Suite Ears in Heaven.
