CU Chorus US Debut
The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chorus (CU Chorus) has long been dedicated to promoting local choral music and cultural activities. Over the years, they have invited countless international musicians to perform and engage in exchange activities in Hong Kong, while also actively seeking international performance opportunities to present Hong Kong's music on the global stage, allowing people from all over the world to appreciate the high level of music development in Hong Kong.
After years of preparation, the CU Chorus has been invited to visit Indianapolis, USA, for a series of performance exchanges, primarily with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. Professor Eric Stark, conductor of the Butler University Jordan College of the Arts and Director of Choral Activities, as well as Artistic Director of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, has collaborated multiple times with the CU Chorus. He first visited Hong Kong in 2013 to serve as a conductor for a choral conducting masterclass organized by the CU Chorus. He later returned in 2016 and 2018 as a guest conductor for CU Chorus concerts, including the "Leonard Bernstein at 100" official celebration event - *The Bernstein in the Theatre—100th Anniversary Memorial Concert* (June 2018), celebrating the centenary of the famous American conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein.
During this visit to Indianapolis, the CU Chorus will exchange performances with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir under the leadership of Eric Stark and will conduct a series of extension activities, including conducting workshops and an introduction to Cantonese choral music. These activities aim to showcase the latest developments of Cantonese choral music in Hong Kong to American audiences and demonstrate the new directions of Hong Kong’s choral development.
This visit marks the CU Chorus's first presentation of Cantonese choral works to North American audiences, following their debut performance at the Taipei National Concert Hall in 2019, where they introduced a full Cantonese choral program to nearly 2,000 audience members from around the world, including renowned musicians. This time, the CU Chorus will showcase a complete Cantonese choral program composed entirely by Hong Kong composers, including new works by four Hong Kong composers under the age of 30, as well as adaptations and new works by three established Hong Kong composers. All of these pieces will have their world premieres at the CU Chorus's concert in June 2025.
